‘A warm, friendly, no-nonsense hostelry well placed for touring southern Wales,’ reports an inspector in 2005.
"In a quiet village amid lovely country on the edge of Brechfa forest, Annabel Viney and Stephen Thomas (the chef), who took over this 15th-century farmhouse in May 2004, ‘have done an exemplary job in making the house and grounds attractive.
"...she was intelligent, responsive, and helpful with advice about the neighbourhood'.
Other visitors wrote:
‘A delicious dinner. An excellent welcome for us and our dog.’
‘Capable staff.’
'Thick stone walls, old wooden beams and other original features have been retained. Bedrooms are ‘decorated in cottage style (nice old pine furniture and painted walls)’, and ‘spotlessly clean’.
‘Our room had everything that mattered except a telephone large comfortable bed, outsize TV, good lighting, excellent towels, lots of toiletries.
The host ‘takes his cooking seriously’, using local produce, often organic, in dishes like Penclawdd cockle, mussel and laver bread tartlet; roast partridge with chestnut gravy. ‘Desserts were excellent: chocolate pot with Cointreau; a generous plate of local cheeses.’
Breakfast has ‘good coffee, no packaged marmalade, fine local bacon’.
To the east of the town is the Brecon Beacons national park; to the west, Cardigan Bay, to the south, the Gower peninsula.
